Operation Linda Nchi

Significance

Operation Linda Nchi marked Kenya's direct military intervention into southern Somalia beginning in October 2011, deploying approximately 6,000 Kenyan Defence Forces personnel against Al-Shabaab positions. The operation represented a significant escalation of regional involvement in the Somali Civil War, with Kenya citing cross-border security threats as justification for the incursion. Although the Kenyan government declared the operation complete in March 2012, its forces did not withdraw but instead integrated into the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), effectively converting a unilateral national offensive into a sustained multilateral commitment. This transition deepened Kenya's long-term entanglement in the conflict and reinforced AMISOM's operational footprint in southern Somalia against Al-Shabaab.
