Battle of Leego

Overview

Al-Shabaab militants attacked an African Union Mission to Somalia base in the Leego district of Somalia and killed 70 African Union soldiers and seized control of their military base on 26 June 2015. A military outpost with around 100 Burundian soldiers was attacked by militants with a car bomb, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Significance

The attack on the AMISOM base at Leego in June 2015 represented one of the most costly single engagements suffered by African Union forces during the Somali Civil War. Al-Shabaab seized control of the military outpost after the assault, reversing an AMISOM presence in the Leego district and demonstrating the group's continued capacity to mass sufficient combat power to overrun fortified positions. The loss of the base handed Al-Shabaab a tangible territorial gain and dealt a severe blow to Burundian contingent strength, with reported killed amounting to a large proportion of the outpost's roughly 100-strong garrison. The engagement underscored the vulnerability of dispersed AMISOM outposts to coordinated assault and raised questions about force protection and the sustainability of the mission's forward presence across southern Somalia.
