Battle of El Adde

Significance

The Battle of El Adde on 15 January 2016 stands as the deadliest single attack ever inflicted on the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and the largest military defeat suffered by the Kenya Defence Forces since Kenyan independence in 1963. Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Kenyan-run AMISOM base in El Adde, Gedo, with a force confronting a garrison estimated at 150–200 personnel; casualties among the defenders reached as high as 100–190, a loss rate that effectively destroyed the unit. The attack demonstrated Al-Shabaab's capacity to mass forces and overwhelm a fortified AMISOM position, undercutting the mission's operational credibility at a time when AMISOM was the primary instrument of stabilization in Somalia. The Kenyan government's effort to suppress the extent of its losses reflected the political sensitivity of the defeat and drew sustained media scrutiny.
