Church of Saint Porphyrius airstrike

Significance

On 19 October 2023, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a building within the compound of the Church of Saint Porphyrius, a Greek Orthodox church in Gaza City. At the time of the strike, approximately 450 Palestinian civilians, predominantly Christians, had been sheltering within the compound. Eighteen were killed and between 12 and at least 20 were injured; the church building itself was not damaged. The incident drew international attention to the conditions facing Gaza's Christian minority during the conflict and to the broader question of civilian shelter sites coming under fire in densely populated Gaza City. As one of the earliest high-profile strikes to directly affect a recognized religious compound being used for civilian shelter, it became a point of reference in debates over the conduct of the war and the protection of civilians in the urban theater.
