Al-Shati refugee camp airstrike

Significance

The IDF airstrike on al-Shati refugee camp on 9 October 2023 struck one of Gaza's most densely populated areas, home to more than 90,000 refugees, destroying four mosques and killing people inside according to Palestinian media reports. A follow-on strike on 12 October killed 13 people. The strikes drew attention to the scale of bombardment in the early phase of the Gaza war and to the humanitarian exposure of civilian infrastructure in the Strip's largest refugee camps.
