Significance
The Battle of Sderot formed part of the large-scale Hamas surprise attack launched on 7 October 2023 against southern Israel, an assault widely condemned as an act of terrorism. Sderot, situated close to the border with the Gaza Strip, had long been exposed to rocket fire and incursions during the broader Gaza–Israel conflict, and the October 7 attack represented a sharp escalation of that pattern. Hamas militants killed numerous civilians and police officers in the city. The assault on Sderot was one node within a wider coordinated offensive that precipitated the Gaza War of 2023, driving the Israeli military response that defined the subsequent campaign.
