Battle of Dong Khe

Overview

The Battle of Route Coloniale 4, also called the Autumn-Winter Border Campaign by the Viet Minh, was a battle of the First Indochina War. It took place along Route Coloniale 4, a road used to supply the French military base at Cao Bằng. French military traffic along the road had previously been subject to an ongoing series of ambushes during 1947–1949.

Significance

The Battle of Dong Khe, fought in September 1950 along Route Coloniale 4, was part of the broader Autumn-Winter Border Campaign conducted by Viet Minh forces under Võ Nguyên Giáp, Hoàng Văn Thái, and Đặng Văn Việt against French Union forces commanded by Marcel Carpentier. Route Coloniale 4 served as the principal supply artery for the French base at Cao Bằng, and the road had been subject to sustained Viet Minh ambushes throughout 1947–1949, making the corridor a persistent operational vulnerability. The disparity in force sizes — 30,000 Viet Minh against 6,000 French Union troops — and the resulting casualties, with French forces suffering 4,800 against 9,000 Viet Minh losses, indicated a significant French defeat. The action demonstrated the Viet Minh's capacity to concentrate large conventional forces and sustain high-tempo offensive operations against French frontier positions, accelerating the erosion of French control along the northern border region during the First Indochina War.
