Battle of Cao Bang

Significance

The Battle of Cao Bằng, spanning from October 1947 to September 1949, illustrated the strategic vulnerability of French garrison positions along the Vietnam–China border during the First Indochina War. Route Coloniale 4, the 147-mile supply corridor connecting Cao Bằng to the coast at the Gulf of Tonkin, proved consistently difficult to secure against Việt Minh interdiction. Repeated ambushes against French convoys forced a cycle of costly relief operations, including a notable Foreign Legion mission in February 1948, without achieving lasting control of the route. The July 1948 direct assault on the Cao Bằng encampment itself, in which two companies held against two Việt Minh battalions for three days, underscored both the isolation of the garrison and the growing offensive capacity of Việt Minh forces. The 28 additional ambushes recorded in 1948 alone indicated that French efforts to keep RC4 open were failing to suppress Việt Minh activity along the border, foreshadowing the broader French difficulties in maintaining exposed northern positions that would culminate in the fall of the RC4 line in 1950.
