Battle of Nghia Lo

Significance

The Battle of Nghĩa Lộ, fought in October 1951 some 95 miles west of Hanoi and 65 miles beyond the western de Lattre Line, marked a significant moment in the shifting momentum of the First Indochina War. Following Giap's defeat along the Day River in June 1951, the Việt Minh's control over the tempo of the conflict had become unstable. His renewed offensive against Nghĩa Lộ—important to the French as the capital of the T'ai people, who maintained strong ties with French forces—was repelled through rapid French reinforcement by paratroopers and air support, with General Salan directing operations in de Lattre's absence. Giap called off the assault and withdrew across the Red River, representing a second consecutive setback. The French success, however, proved temporary: a year later, in October 1952, the Việt Minh returned and succeeded in driving French forces from the area entirely, ultimately securing the strategic position they had failed to take in 1951.
