Overview

The Battle of Mạo Khê, occurring from March 23 to March 28, 1951, was a significant engagement in the First Indochina War between the French Union and the communist Việt Minh. The French Union forces, including the French Far East Expeditionary Corps and Vietnamese National Army, led by World War II hero Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, inflicted a defeat on Việt Minh forces, which were commanded by General Võ Nguyên Giáp. However this victory of the French Union against the Việt Minh, unlike their success in Vĩnh Yên before, was not decisive. The Việt Minh would attack again shortly afterwards.

Significance

The Battle of Mạo Khê was a French Union victory over Việt Minh forces commanded by Võ Nguyên Giáp, delivering another tactical success for Jean de Lattre de Tassigny following the earlier engagement at Vĩnh Yên. French Union forces, including the French Far East Expeditionary Corps and the Vietnamese National Army, inflicted an estimated 2,000–3,000 casualties on the roughly 11,000-strong Việt Minh force. However, unlike Vĩnh Yên, the result at Mạo Khê was not decisive. The Việt Minh retained sufficient cohesion to mount further offensive operations shortly afterward, underscoring the limits of tactical battlefield success in degrading Giáp's capacity to continue the campaign. The battle illustrated a recurring pattern of the First Indochina War: French forces could defeat set-piece Việt Minh assaults with considerable losses inflicted, yet could not translate those defeats into strategic momentum or durable Việt Minh disengagement.
