The Battle of Dong Khe, fought in September 1950 along Route Coloniale 4, was part of the broader Autumn-Winter Border Campaign conducted by Viet Minh forces under Võ Nguyên Giáp, Hoàng Văn Thái, and Đặng Văn Việt against French Union forces commanded by Marcel Carpentier. Route Coloniale 4 served as the principal supply artery for the French base at Cao Bằng, and the road had been subject to sustained Viet Minh ambushes throughout 1947–1949, making the corridor a persistent operational vulnerability. The disparity in force sizes — 30,000 Viet Minh against 6,000 French Union troops — and the resulting casualties, with French forces suffering 4,800 against 9,000 Viet Minh losses, indicated a significant French defeat.
