Operation Opera Orientalis

Significance

Operation Opera Orientalis was a Yugoslav People's Army counterintelligence (KOS) false flag operation conducted in Zagreb during the early stages of the Croatian War of Independence. Two bombings were carried out on 19 August 1991—one at the Jewish Community Centre and one near Jewish graves at the Mirogoj Cemetery—with no casualties recorded. Additional attacks targeted the national railway network. The operation was designed to portray Croatia as a pro-fascist state and to implicate Croatian President Franjo Tuđman, thereby delegitimizing the Croatian independence movement in the eyes of the international community. It was complemented by Operation Opera, a KOS-run propaganda campaign intended to amplify the disinformation through media channels. Together, the two operations reflected a coordinated Yugoslav intelligence effort to shape external perceptions of the conflict at a moment when international recognition of Croatia remained undecided.
