Significance
The Battle of Gospić, fought from 29 August to 22 September 1991, resulted in the expulsion of Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and Serbian Guard forces from the town, delivering Croatian forces control of a significant Lika regional center during the opening phase of the Croatian War of Independence. The battle demonstrated a recurring dynamic of the early war: JNA garrison forces, initially holding fortified positions with artillery support, could be dislodged when Croatian units succeeded in capturing their logistical infrastructure. The seizure of several JNA depots and barracks on 14 September proved the turning point, stripping the garrison of the material basis to sustain its positions and accelerating the collapse of the remaining barracks by 20 September. The outcome secured Gospić for Croatian forces at a moment when control of towns in the Lika region was actively contested.
Tactics
The JNA occupied five barracks within Gospić and held the eastern districts of the town, supported by artillery, producing largely static fighting in that sector. The balance shifted when Croatian National Guard and police forces captured several JNA depots and barracks on 14 September, undermining the garrison's ability to hold its remaining positions. The remaining barracks fell by 20 September, completing the Croatian seizure of the town.
