The Battle of Wandiwash was a battle in India between the French and the British in 1760. The battle was part of the Third Carnatic War fought between the French and British colonial empires, which itself was a part of the global Seven Years' War. It took place at Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu. Having made substantial gains in Bengal and Hyderabad, the British, after collecting a large amount of revenue, were fully equipped to face the French in Wandiwash, whom they defeated.

Significance

The Battle of Wandiwash, fought on January 22, 1760, was a decisive engagement in the Third Carnatic War, the South Asian theater of the global Seven Years' War, between a British East India Company force of 1,900 under Sir Eyre Coote and a French Indies Company force of 2,250 under the Comte de Lally at Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu. The battle came after the British had consolidated substantial gains in Bengal and Hyderabad, accumulating sufficient revenue and resources to equip a force capable of directly confronting French power on the Coromandel Coast. The British victory at Wandiwash effectively broke French military capacity in India.
