The Battle of Wandiwash, fought on January 22, 1760, was a decisive engagement in the Third Carnatic War, the South Asian theater of the global Seven Years' War, between a British East India Company force of 1,900 under Sir Eyre Coote and a French Indies Company force of 2,250 under the Comte de Lally at Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu. The battle came after the British had consolidated substantial gains in Bengal and Hyderabad, accumulating sufficient revenue and resources to equip a force capable of directly confronting French power on the Coromandel Coast. The British victory at Wandiwash effectively broke French military capacity in India. Within the wider context of the Seven Years' War, the outcome accelerated the collapse of French imperial ambitions on the subcontinent, leaving the British East India Company as the dominant European power in India and laying the groundwork for British colonial supremacy that would define the region's political order for the following century and a half.
