Overview
The Battle of Warburg was fought on 31 July 1760 during the Seven Years' War. The battle was a victory for the Hanoverians and the British against a slightly larger French army. The victory meant the Anglo-German allies had successfully defended Westphalia from the French by preventing a crossing of the Diemel River, but were forced to abandon the allied state of Hesse-Kassel to the south. The fortress of Kassel ultimately fell, and would remain in French hands until the final months of the war, when it was finally recaptured by the Anglo-German allies in late 1762.

Significance
The Battle of Warburg on 31 July 1760 resulted in a Hanoverian and British victory over a larger French force under Louis de Muy, with Hanoverian casualties of approximately 1,200 against French losses of around 1,500. The engagement produced a mixed strategic outcome within the western German theater of the Seven Years' War. The Anglo-German allies under Prince Ferdinand successfully defended Westphalia by preventing a French crossing of the Diemel River, securing that zone against French penetration. However, the victory did not prevent the loss of the allied state of Hesse-Kassel to the south: the fortress of Kassel fell to French forces and remained under French occupation until late 1762, when Anglo-German forces finally recaptured it in the final months of the war. Warburg thus illustrates the constrained character of the western German campaign, in which operational successes along one axis did not preclude significant territorial losses along another, and the control of key fortresses remained contested across the full remaining duration of the conflict.
