Significance

At Liegnitz on 15 August 1760, a Prussian force of 30,000 under Frederick the Great engaged an Austrian army of 25,000 under Ernst von Laudon during the Seven Years' War. Prussian casualties of 3,394 against Austrian losses of 8,537 indicate a clear Prussian tactical success. The engagement formed part of the sustained campaigning in the Silesian and Bohemian theaters that characterized the middle years of the war, where Frederick operated on interior lines against multiple converging Austrian forces.
