Battle of the Ebro

Overview

The Battle of the Ebro was the longest and largest battle of the Spanish Civil War and the greatest, in terms of manpower, logistics and material ever fought on Spanish soil. It took place between July and November 1938, with fighting mainly concentrated in two areas on the lower course of the Ebro River, the Terra Alta comarca of Catalonia, and the Auts area close to Fayón in the lower Matarranya, Eastern Lower Aragon. These sparsely populated areas saw the largest array of armies in the war. The battle was a massive blow to the Second Spanish Republic, with tens of thousands left dead or wounded and little effect on the advance of the Nationalists.

Significance

Concentrated along the lower course of the Ebro River across the Terra Alta comarca of Catalonia and the Auts area near Fayón in eastern Lower Aragon, it engaged the largest array of armies seen in the war. Despite committing around 80,000 troops under commanders including Vicente Rojo Lluch, Juan Modesto, and Enrique Líster, the Second Spanish Republic suffered tens of thousands dead and wounded with little effect on the Nationalist advance. The battle proved a massive blow to Republican war capacity, depleting manpower and materiel that could not be replaced at a decisive phase of the conflict, while the Nationalists under Franco, with roughly 90,000 troops and lower reported casualties, maintained their operational momentum. The outcome effectively exhausted the Republic's offensive capacity and accelerated the trajectory toward Nationalist victory in 1939.
