The May Days, sometimes also called May Events, were a series of clashes between 3 and 8 May 1937 during which factions on the Republican side of the Spanish Civil War engaged one another in street battles in various parts of Catalonia, centered on the city of Barcelona.

Significance

The Barcelona May Days represented a critical fracture within the Republican coalition during the Spanish Civil War. Between 3 and 8 May 1937, factions nominally on the same side fought one another in street battles across Catalonia, with Barcelona as the center of the conflict. The internal violence exposed the depth of ideological divisions within the Republic, pitting competing left-wing factions against each other at a moment when unified resistance to Nationalist forces was essential. With Republican casualties reaching into the thousands, the May Days weakened the broader anti-Fascist effort and accelerated the consolidation of central Republican government authority over rival political tendencies, particularly in Catalonia.
