The Battle of Bilbao, part of the War in the North in the Spanish Civil War, saw the Nationalist Army capture Bilbao and the rest of the Basque Country that was still being held by the Spanish Republic.

Significance

The Battle of Bilbao resulted in Nationalist forces capturing Bilbao and completing their conquest of the remaining Republican-held Basque Country. The loss eliminated the Republic's control over a significant industrial and population center in northern Spain, depriving it of resources and a coastal foothold in the region. With some 14,000 Republican casualties from a force of 50,000, the defeat was substantial. The outcome formed part of the broader Nationalist campaign in the North, which aimed to consolidate control over the entire northern coast and strip the Republic of its northern territories piecemeal. The fall of Bilbao effectively ended organized Basque resistance and accelerated the Nationalist position in the War in the North.
