Unified Task Force

Overview

The Unified Task Force (UNITAF), also known as Operation Restore Hope, was a United States–led, United Nations–sanctioned coalition military force deployed to Somalia from 5 December 1992 to 4 May 1993. It was established to replace United Nations Operation in Somalia I, which had been deployed in April 1992 in response to the 1992 famine—a crisis that followed the 1991 collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic and the full outbreak of the Somali Civil War.

Significance

The Unified Task Force (UNITAF), operating as Operation Restore Hope, represented a direct international military response to the humanitarian catastrophe produced by Somalia's civil war. Following the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic in 1991, famine and factional conflict created conditions that the preceding UN Operation in Somalia I could not adequately address. UNITAF was established to replace that mission and was deployed from December 1992 to May 1993 under U.S. leadership with UN sanction. Its creation marked an escalation in the international community's commitment to stabilizing Somalia, though its limited mandate and subsequent handover to UN authority framed the broader, ultimately inconclusive international intervention in the Somali Civil War.
