Battle of Jilib

Overview

The Battle of Jilib took place on the last day of 2006 during the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia. It was fought when Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) troops and Transitional Federal Government (TFG) militia launched an offensive on the town of Jilib, held by the Islamic Courts Union (ICU).

Significance

The Battle of Jilib was fought on the final day of 2006 as part of the broader Ethiopian military intervention in Somalia, in which Ethiopian National Defence Force units and Transitional Federal Government militia pressed south against Islamic Courts Union-held territory. The ICU had rapidly expanded its control across much of southern Somalia earlier that year, but the Ethiopian-backed TFG offensive reversed those gains in a matter of weeks. The assault on Jilib represented one of the culminating engagements of that campaign, with ENDF forces numbering roughly twice the ICU strength committed to the town. The battle occurred within a compressed operational sequence that stripped the ICU of its major population centers and effectively ended its period of territorial governance, though the organization's armed elements dispersed rather than surrendering, setting conditions for a prolonged insurgency in subsequent years.
