Battle for Central Somalia

Significance

A series of engagements across Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, and Galguduud during spring 2009 marked a significant territorial shift in the Somali Civil War. Al-Shabaab and allied Hizbul Islam forces seized major government strongholds in central Somalia, demonstrating the Transitional Federal Government's inability to hold ground outside Mogadishu. The fighting prompted Ethiopian forces to re-enter Somalia and establish bases in Hiraan, reflecting the regional stakes of al-Shabaab's advance. A government offensive launched in Mogadishu on May 22 temporarily halted the fighting in the central regions, indicating that the TFG was forced to prioritize its hold on the capital over consolidating positions inland. The battles collectively illustrated the fragility of government control across central Somalia and the growing operational reach of al-Shabaab beyond its southern strongholds.
