Battle of Wabho

Significance

The Battle of Wabho was a single-day engagement in central Somalia between the pro-government Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a militia and the Islamist insurgent groups Hizbul Islam and al-Shabaab. With more than 123 people reported killed, it ranks among the bloodiest single engagements of the Somali Civil War. The battle was fought for control of the Wabho district, reflecting the broader contest during this period between the Transitional Federal Government and its allied militias on one side and a coalition of Islamist insurgents on the other. The scale of casualties in a one-day fight underscored the intensity of the struggle for central Somalia, where Hizbul Islam and al-Shabaab were actively contesting territory against forces aligned with the recognized government.
