Second Ostend Raid

Significance

The Second Ostend Raid was the second of two failed British attempts in spring 1918 to block the channels leading to the Belgian port of Ostend during World War I. The operation was part of a broader Royal Navy effort to deny the Imperial German Navy use of the Belgian ports, which had provided significant strategic advantages since 1915, including serving as a base for U-boat operations during the Battle of the Atlantic. The failure of both raids meant the port remained available to German forces, leaving the U-boat campaign's logistical infrastructure in the region intact. As one of the more ambitious offensive naval operations undertaken by the Royal Navy under Roger Keyes during the war, the inability to achieve the blocking objective at Ostend reflected the difficulty of executing coastal denial operations against a defended port.
