Overview

The Battle of Paneriai, also known as Battle of Vilnius, was one of the most important events of the November Uprising, when on June 19, 1831, Giełgud's corps was defeated by Osten-Sacken's men near Vilnius, ending the war in Lithuania.

Significance

The Battle of Paneriai, also known as the Battle of Vilnius, was one of the most significant engagements of the November Uprising. On June 19, 1831, a Polish corps under Antoni Giełgud was defeated by Russian forces under Dmitri Osten-Sacken in a clash of roughly equal size—24,000 men on each side—that cost the Polish side approximately 1,200 casualties. The defeat ended the November Uprising's Lithuanian theater, extinguishing Polish operational ambitions in the region and consolidating Russian control over Lithuania for the remainder of the conflict.
