Battle of Białołęka

The Battle of Białołęka was fought from 24 to 25 February 1831 in the village of Białołęka, Poland, during the November Uprising. Though the Polish forces were victorious over the Russians, the outcome was not decisive, and was inconclusive in the scope of the larger Russo-Polish War.

Significance

The Battle of Białołęka, fought on 24–25 February 1831 near Warsaw during the November Uprising, resulted in a Polish victory over Russian forces under Ivan Shakhovskoy. Polish commanders Krukowiecki, Giełgud, and Małachowski led a numerically superior force of 13,000 against approximately 11,000 Russian troops, inflicting over 1,070 casualties on the Russian side. Despite the favorable outcome, the battle did not produce a decisive shift in the wider Russo-Polish War. The Polish forces failed to exploit their advantage in a way that altered the operational situation around Warsaw or degraded Russian capacity to continue the campaign. The engagement stands as an example of a tactical success that carried limited strategic weight — a pattern that characterized much of the November Uprising, where Polish forces could win engagements but could not translate those wins into durable operational gains against the larger Russian effort to suppress the revolt.
