Significance

The Battle of Iganie, fought on 10 April 1831, was one of the last major engagements of the November Uprising and marked the final significant Polish offensive effort of the war. A Polish force of roughly 22,000 under Prądzyński and Kicki engaged a Russian force of approximately 24,000 under Geismar and von Rosen, inflicting around 4,000 Russian casualties against approximately 1,500 of their own. Despite this tactical result, the battle carried a strategic finality: the Poles were unable to press any broader advantage, and no further major offensive operations followed. The engagement thus signals the point at which Polish forces exhausted their capacity for large-scale initiative, leaving the November Uprising without a viable path to military success.
