Significance

Operation Faustschlag, conducted in February 1918, was the last major Central Powers offensive on the Eastern Front of World War I. Launched against Soviet republican forces under Nikolai Krylenko and directed by a Central Powers command that included Leopold of Bavaria, Max Hoffmann, Erich von Falkenhayn, and Eduard von Böhm-Ermolli, the offensive—sometimes called the Eleven Days' War—inflicted approximately 63,000 casualties on the Soviet side. The operation served as a decisive demonstration of military pressure that effectively forced the new Soviet government to accept terms, marking the close of large-scale combat on the Eastern Front and freeing Central Powers forces to redeploy to other theaters in the final phase of the war.
