Significance

The Japanese invasion of Sakhalin was the final land engagement of the Russo-Japanese War, concluded on July 31, 1905. Japan committed roughly 14,000 troops against a Russian force of approximately 7,280 defenders, inflicting around 3,270 Russian casualties. As the last land battle of the war, the seizure of Sakhalin strengthened Japan's negotiating position ahead of the Portsmouth Peace negotiations, which would formally end the conflict. Control of the island represented a tangible territorial gain secured in the war's closing weeks.
