Battle of Mukden

Overview

The Battle of Mukden , one of the largest land battles to be fought before World War I and the last and the most decisive major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War, was fought from 20 February to 10 March 1905 between Japan and Russia near Mukden in Manchuria. The city is now called Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province in China.

Significance

The Battle of Mukden was the last and most decisive major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War, fought near Mukden in Manchuria from 20 February to 10 March 1905. With Japan fielding roughly 270,000 troops against a Russian force of approximately 292,000, it ranked among the largest land engagements fought before World War I. Combined casualties exceeded 165,000. The battle effectively ended large-scale land operations in the war, leaving Russia without the capacity to mount a decisive counteroffensive in Manchuria and accelerating the conditions that led to the war's conclusion.
