Despite the Russian Empire fielding nearly twice the Japanese force strength — 75,000 troops against 40,000 — both sides sustained heavy casualties, with Russian losses exceeding 13,900 and Japanese losses approaching 9,500. The engagement was part of the extended contest for Manchuria that culminated in the broader struggle around Mukden, the war's largest land battle. Sandepu reflected the attritional character of the Manchurian campaign, where neither side achieved decisive results through numerical advantage alone, and set conditions for the climactic confrontation at Mukden weeks later.
