Battle of Liaoyang

Overview

The Battle of Liaoyang was a major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War, on the outskirts of the city of Liaoyang in present-day Liaoning Province, China. The city was of great strategic importance as the major Russian military center for southern Manchuria, and a major population center on the main line on the Russian South Manchurian Railway connecting Port Arthur with Mukden. The city was fortified by the Imperial Russian Army with three lines of fortifications.

Significance

Liaoyang was the principal Russian military base for southern Manchuria and a critical node on the South Manchurian Railway linking Port Arthur with Mukden, making it one of the most strategically weighted objectives of the land campaign. The city's three defensive lines reflected its recognized importance to Russian operations in the theater. Japanese forces under Ōyama Iwao, committing over 127,000 troops against a Russian force of approximately 149,000 under Kuropatkin, sustained casualties of nearly 23,000 against Russian losses of around 19,000, underscoring the intensity of the engagement. Control of Liaoyang directly affected Russian ability to sustain and coordinate forces across southern Manchuria, and its fall would sever or threaten the logistical corridor that underpinned the entire Russian position in the region.
