Battle of Vosges

Overview

The Battle of Vosges, also referred to as the Battle of Vesontio, was fought on September 14, 58 BC between a coalition of Germanic tribes, under the leadership of Ariovistus, and a Roman army supported by Gallic allies under the overall command of Gaius Julius Caesar. This encounter is the second major battle of the Gallic Wars.

Significance

The Battle of Vosges, fought in 58 BC between Caesar's Roman forces with Gallic allies and Ariovistus's Germanic coalition, constituted the second major engagement of the Gallic War. The Roman force of 25,000–30,000 faced a Suebi-led coalition of approximately 120,000, and Suebi casualties reached 80,000. The battle represented Caesar's direct confrontation with Germanic power west of the Rhine, a central strategic concern of the early campaign. The scale of Suebi losses effectively removed Ariovistus as a significant force in Gaul and established Roman military authority over the region in the opening phase of the war.
