Battle of the Axona

Overview

The Battle of the Axona was fought in 57 BC, between the Roman army of Gaius Julius Caesar and the Belgae. The Belgae, led by King Galba of the Suessiones, attacked, only to be repelled by Caesar. Fearing an ambush, the Romans delayed their pursuit. Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico describes this battle at 2.7 - 2.11.

Significance

The Battle of the Axona was an engagement between Caesar's Roman forces and a Belgic coalition led by King Galba of the Suessiones during the 57 BCE campaign of the Gallic War. The Belgae, fielding a force estimated at 50,000 against a Roman army of 40,000–45,000, initiated the attack and were repelled with recorded casualties of approximately 10,000 against Roman losses of around 1,000. The engagement checked the Belgic offensive and demonstrated Roman capacity to hold against a numerically superior northern tribal force, sustaining Caesar's broader campaign of consolidating Roman control over Gaul. Caesar's own account in the Commentarii de Bello Gallico, at sections 2.7–2.11, serves as the primary record of the battle. The result of the engagement is not formally recorded as a decisive conclusion, and the Roman decision to halt pursuit out of concern for ambush limited any immediate exploitation of the Belgic repulse.
