Battle of Morbihan

Significance

The Battle of Morbihan, fought in the summer of 56 BC off the coast of Brittany, was a decisive Roman naval engagement against the Veneti during the Gallic Wars. The Veneti, a Gallic tribe of the region, were confronted by a Roman fleet dispatched by Julius Caesar and commanded by Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus. The battle ended in a decisive Roman victory, breaking Veneti naval power in the area and extending Roman military dominance into the Atlantic coastal region of Gaul. The engagement represents one of the significant Roman naval actions within the broader Gallic War campaign.
