The Battle of Ueno was a battle of the Boshin War, which occurred on 4 July 1868, between the troops of the Shōgitai under Shibusawa Seiichirō and Amano Hachirō, and Imperial "Kangun" troops.

Significance

The Battle of Ueno was fought on 4 July 1868 during the Boshin War, pitting approximately 2,000 Shōgitai troops under Shibusawa Seiichirō and Amano Hachirō against an equal-strength Imperial force commanded by figures including Ōmura Masujirō, Saigō Takamori, and Itagaki Taisuke. The Shōgitai suffered approximately 300 casualties, a loss that effectively broke this pro-Bakufu formation as an organized fighting force. The engagement removed one of the remaining concentrations of Tokugawa resistance in the capital region, consolidating Imperial control and limiting the Bakufu's capacity to mount a sustained defense as the Boshin War moved toward its final phases.
