Significance

The Battle of Aizu was fought in northern Japan during the autumn of 1868 as part of the broader Boshin War between imperial forces and the Tokugawa shogunate. The imperial coalition, led by commanders from Satsuma Domain, fielded a force of approximately 15,000 against a shogunate force of roughly 5,000, resulting in shogunate casualties of nearly 3,000. The engagement formed part of the northern campaign through which imperial forces systematically reduced remaining shogunate resistance following the fall of Edo, consolidating Meiji authority over domains that had remained loyal to the Tokugawa. The disparity in force sizes and the scale of shogunate losses indicate the degree to which organized resistance in the Tohoku region had been overwhelmed by the time the battle concluded in November 1868.
