Battle of Kōshū-Katsunuma

Overview

The Battle of Kōshū-Katsunuma took place between pro-Imperial and Tokugawa shogunate forces during the Boshin War in Japan. The battle followed the Battle of Toba–Fushimi on 29 March 1868.

Significance

The Battle of Kōshū-Katsunuma was fought on 29 March 1868 between pro-Imperial forces and troops loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate, part of the broader Boshin War following the earlier Imperial victory at Toba–Fushimi. The shogunate force, which included prominent figures from the Shinsengumi such as Kondō Isami and Hijikata Toshizō, suffered approximately 300 casualties against an Imperial contingent of some 3,000 troops. The engagement continued the erosion of shogunate military capacity that had begun at Toba–Fushimi, further limiting the Bakufu's ability to mount organized resistance as Imperial forces extended their operational reach.
