The Battle of Trautenau or Battle of Trutnov was fought on 27 June 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War. It was the only battle of the war that ended in an Austrian victory over the Prussians, but at a large cost.

Significance

The Battle of Trautenau on 27 June 1866 stands as the only Austrian victory over Prussian forces during the Austro-Prussian War. Prussian casualties reached approximately 1,400 against Austrian losses of around 5,000, meaning Austria paid a steep price to secure its single battlefield success of the conflict. The disproportionate cost to the Austrian side undermined whatever operational advantage the victory might have offered, leaving the Austrian Empire unable to translate the tactical result into broader campaign momentum. Within the wider war, the battle remained an isolated exception to a pattern of Prussian dominance rather than a turning point in Austria's favor.
