Battle of Tamames

Overview

The Battle of Tamames was lost by part of Marshal Michel Ney's French army under General of Division Jean Marchand in the Peninsular War. The French, advancing out of Salamanca, were met and defeated in battle by a Spanish army on 18 October 1809.

Significance

The Battle of Tamames resulted in a French defeat when part of Marshal Michel Ney's army, under General of Division Jean Marchand, was checked by a Spanish force more than twice its size. Advancing out of Salamanca, the French column of approximately 11,000 men encountered a Spanish army of around 21,000 under the Duke del Parque and suffered between 1,300 and 1,400 casualties. The engagement demonstrated that Spanish regular forces could, under favorable conditions of numerical superiority, successfully contest French advances in the Peninsula and impose meaningful losses on Napoleonic forces operating in the region.
