Battle of Taejon

Overview

The Battle of Taejon was an early battle of the Korean War, between U.S. and North Korean forces. Forces of the United States Army attempted to defend the headquarters of the 24th Infantry Division. The 24th Infantry Division was overwhelmed by numerically superior forces of the Korean People's Army (KPA) at the major city and transportation hub of Daejon. The 24th Infantry Division's regiments were already exhausted from the previous two weeks of delaying actions to stem the advance of the KPA.

Significance

Taejon was an early engagement of the Korean War in which U.S. Army forces attempted to hold the headquarters of the 24th Infantry Division against numerically superior Korean People's Army forces. The 24th Infantry Division entered the battle already depleted by two weeks of prior delaying actions against the KPA advance, and was overwhelmed at the city, a major transportation hub. The fall of the position reflected the broader difficulty UN forces faced in the opening weeks of the war: understrength and fatigued units attempting to slow a well-resourced offensive with limited means. The loss of Taejon and the encirclement of divisional headquarters illustrated the fragility of the initial American defensive posture on the peninsula and the operational pressure the KPA was able to sustain during its rapid southward drive.
