Battle of Korea Strait

Significance

The Battle of Korea Strait was fought on the opening day of the Korean War and produced one of the first South Korean victories of the conflict. A North Korean troop transport carrying an estimated 600 soldiers attempted an amphibious landing near Busan, the major port city on the southeastern tip of the peninsula. Had the force reached shore, it could have threatened one of South Korea's most critical logistical hubs from the outset of the war. The interception and sinking of the transport by the South Korean patrol ship ROKS Baekdusan denied North Korea that landing and eliminated the embarked force. As an early surface action, the engagement demonstrated that South Korean naval forces could contest North Korean maritime operations, and it protected a port that would become central to the United Nations Command's ability to receive reinforcements and supplies in the weeks that followed.
