Battle of Osan

LOADING MAP TELEMETRY…

Overview

The Battle of Osan was the first engagement between the United States and North Korea during the Korean War. On July 5, 1950, Task Force Smith, an American task force of 540 infantry supported by an artillery battery, was moved to Osan, south of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and was ordered to fight as a rearguard to delay the advancing North Korean forces while more US troops arrived to form a stronger defensive line to the south. The task force lacked both anti-tank guns and effective infantry anti-tank weapons and had been equipped with obsolete rocket launchers and a few 57 mm recoilless rifles. Aside from a limited number of HEAT shells for the unit's 105 mm howitzers, crew-served weapons that could defeat T-34/85 tanks from the Soviet Union had not yet been distributed to the US Army forces in South Korea.

Significance

The Battle of Osan was the first engagement between the United States and North Korea in the Korean War, marking the initial commitment of American ground forces to halt the North Korean advance south of Seoul. Task Force Smith, comprising roughly 540 infantry and an artillery battery, was deployed as a rearguard at Osan to delay a North Korean force of approximately 5,000 troops while additional US reinforcements moved to establish a stronger defensive line further south. The engagement exposed a critical material deficiency in US forces: effective anti-tank weapons had not been distributed to American units in South Korea. Task Force Smith was equipped with obsolete rocket launchers, a limited number of 57 mm recoilless rifles, and only a handful of HEAT shells capable of penetrating Soviet-supplied T-34/85 tanks. This gap between the mission assigned and the means available shaped the early operational character of the US intervention, demonstrating that American forces arriving in theater were not yet prepared to counter North Korean armor.

Tactics

Task Force Smith was positioned at Osan, south of Seoul, to fight as a delaying rearguard against the advancing North Korean forces. The force consisted of 540 supported by an artillery battery. Their primary anti-armor capability rested on a limited supply of HEAT rounds for their 105 mm howitzers, as crew-served weapons effective against T-34/85 tanks had not yet reached US units in South Korea. The infantry carried obsolete rocket launchers and a small number of 57 mm recoilless rifles, none of which provided reliable means to defeat North Korean armor.
