Overview

Battle of Steyr was fought on 4 November 1805 between the French army under the command of Louis-Nicolas Davout and the Austrian army under the command of General Maximilian, Count of Merveldt during the War of the Third Coalition. It ended in French victory.

Significance

The Battle of Steyr, fought on 4 November 1805, resulted in a French victory for Davout's force of 3,000 over Merveldt's 4,000 Austrians, who suffered approximately 2,000 casualties. The engagement occurred during the War of the Third Coalition, a period of rapid French operational advance into Habsburg territory following the Ulm capitulation. A Austrian force larger than the French one was effectively neutralized at significant cost, removing it from further operations at a critical moment in the campaign that would culminate weeks later at Austerlitz.
