Significance

The Battle of Amstetten on 5 November 1805 was a rearguard action during the broader Austro-Russian retreat following the fall of Vienna. Murat's cavalry and elements of Lannes' corps intercepted the withdrawing Russo-Austrian column, but Bagration's rearguard absorbed the pressure and allowed Kutuzov's main force to continue its retreat intact. Despite suffering casualties comparable to the French, the Russo-Austrian force achieved its operational purpose: preserving the army for continued resistance. The engagement is notable as the first occasion in the War of the Third Coalition in which a substantial portion of the Russian Army met a significant French force in open combat.
