Battle of Elchingen

Significance

The French victory at Elchingen on 14 October 1805 directly collapsed Austrian cohesion in the Ulm sector. Ney's corps routed Riesch's Austrian force, inflicting roughly 6,000 casualties on a force of 16,000, and the defeat split the Austrian army: a large portion was driven into the fortress of Ulm and besieged there, while other formations scattered eastward. The encirclement at Ulm then produced an Austrian capitulation, and French forces mopped up most remaining Austrian units in the area. Elchingen was thus the battlefield action that sealed the Ulm Campaign, eliminating an entire Austrian army as an effective force and leaving the road into central Europe open to Napoleon's army.
