Battle of Skalitz

Overview

The Battle of Skalitz was a minor engagement in the Königgratz/Sadowa campaign of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 in Bohemia on 28 June. Following the Prussian victory at the Battle of Náchod the previous day, the Prussian forces, led by General of the Infantry Steinmetz, advanced on Skalitz and defeated the forces of Archduke Leopold.

Significance

The Battle of Skalitz formed part of the rapid Prussian advance through Bohemia during the Königgratz/Sadowa campaign of the Austro-Prussian War. Fought one day after the Prussian victory at Náchod, it extended the pressure on Austrian forces in the region, with Steinmetz's forces defeating those of Archduke Leopold. The disparity in casualties — Austria suffering more than four times the Prussian losses — indicates a severe blow to Austrian strength in this sector, compounding the damage inflicted at Náchod and accelerating the deterioration of the Austrian position ahead of the decisive engagement at Königgratz.
