Battle of Sauce

Significance

The Battle of Sauce was an engagement during the Portuguese conquest of the Banda Oriental, fought in Arroyo Oriental in territory that is present-day Uruguay. Luso-Brazilian forces under Pinto de Araújo Correia engaged Liga de los Pueblos Libres fighters, inflicting 150 casualties. The battle followed directly from a prior Luso-Brazilian victory over the forces of Fructuoso Rivera, indicating it formed part of a sequential operational push rather than an isolated skirmish. Beyond the casualty figures and its connection to the Rivera engagement, the recorded evidence does not allow fuller assessment of its effect on the broader campaign.
