Battle of Sauce

Overview

The Battle of Sauce of 1816 took place between the Luso-Brazilian forces under the command of Pinto de Araújo Correia in Arroyo Oriental, modern-day Uruguay. The engagement resulted of the encounter between the Luso-Brazilian forces that had previously defeated the men of Fructuoso Rivera.

Significance

The Battle of Sauce was an engagement during the Portuguese conquest of the Banda Oriental, fought in Arroyo Oriental in territory that is present-day Uruguay. Luso-Brazilian forces under Pinto de Araújo Correia engaged Liga de los Pueblos Libres fighters, inflicting 150 casualties. The battle followed directly from a prior Luso-Brazilian victory over the forces of Fructuoso Rivera, indicating it formed part of a sequential operational push rather than an isolated skirmish.
