Significance

The Battle of India Muerta was an engagement during the Luso-Brazilian invasion of the Banda Oriental, pitting Portuguese-Brazilian forces against the artiguist fighters of the Federal League under Fructuoso Rivera in the Rocha region of present-day Uruguay. The battle lasted four and a half hours and ended in a Luso-Brazilian victory, reinforcing the momentum of the Portuguese conquest against the resistance organized under Artigas and his regional commanders. Rivera's force of 1,700 men was unable to halt the advance, and the outcome contributed to the progressive erosion of Federal League military capacity in the Banda Oriental during this period of the campaign.
